Type Locality and Naming

Named after the Mastavat River, Gissar Range. E.M. Golovin in 1939-1942 from the pre-middle Paleozoic metamorphic formation (Shargun Suite)

Synonym: Mastavat Suite, Маставатская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Orthogneisses, gneisses, amphibolites, developed on acidic and basic volcanic rocks, with rare layers of crystalline biotite and cordierite slates, marbles, metamorphosed jasperoids, metasiliceous-carbonate rocks (Yudalevich, Divaev et al., 1994). Thickness over 2000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Suite is mainly tectonic.

Upper contact

Suites are mainly tectonic, however, in some outcrops in the southern area of its development, the Obizarang Fm is observed to overlie the Mastavat Fm (Yudalevich et al., 1994).

Regional extent

South slope of the Gissar Range, basins of the Kyzyl-Darya, Tanhazy-Darya, Mastavat, Chiliks, Gaznov, and other rivers.

Age 

Considering the high degree of metamorphism of the Mastavat Suite (amphibolite and epidote-amphibolite facies), as well as the overlying Paleozoic (?) Obizarang Suite, its age is conditionally accepted as early Proterozoic. As carbonates (previously considered lenses and layers) containing organic remains (from the Ordovician to the early Carboniferous) were found in tectonic blocks, the age of the suite was accepted, starting from the late Proterozoic (Ovchinnikov, Tarasenko et al., 1956) to the early Carboniferous (385; Bezuglov et al., 1980). In the monograph (165), it is conditionally dated to the middle Ordovician based on comparison with the middle Ordovician deposits of the Kuljuktau, Zarafshan Range; on the State Geological Map-500 of Uzbekistan (460), it is conditionally dated to the Proterozoic.
